Frequently Asked Questions

Since the incision is made in a natural fold behind the ear, the scars are not visible from the outside.

Because the ear cartilage is reshaped with permanent sutures, the results of the surgery are generally permanent, and the ears are not expected to return to their original position.

The surgery can usually be performed from the age of 5-6 to prevent potential psychological problems that may arise during school age, as the ear's development is largely complete by then.

There is no pain during the surgery as anesthesia is administered. Afterwards, there may be a mild ache and sensitivity, but this can be easily managed with pain relievers recommended by your doctor.

Since the ears need to be protected, it is recommended to avoid heavy physical activities, such as contact sports, for 1-2 months. Lighter activities like swimming can usually be resumed after a few weeks.

Protruding ears, also known as “Dumbo ears” or “bat ears,” are a common condition that can affect a person’s aesthetic appearance and lead to self-confidence issues, especially during childhood. This condition is caused by developmental differences in the ear cartilage. Protruding ear correction, or otoplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at repositioning the ears closer to the head to achieve a more natural and balanced facial profile.

What is Protruding Ear Correction (Otoplasty)?

Otoplasty is a procedure where a small incision is made behind the ear to reshape the ear cartilage, bringing the ears closer to the head. The surgery is performed using techniques such as making the ear folds more prominent and reducing the angle between the ear and the head. The goal of the surgery is to ensure the ears look proportionate and natural with the face.

Who is a Candidate?
  • Those who are bothered by the appearance of their protruding ears and are experiencing psychological effects.
  • Individuals who are unhappy with the size or shape of their ears.

  • It can be performed on children starting from the age of 5-6, when ear cartilage development is largely complete and the child becomes aware of their condition.

  • People who are in good general health and do not have any conditions that would prevent surgery.

Advantages of the Procedure
  • Aesthetic Appearance: It ensures the ears are proportionate to the face and positioned closer to the head.

  • Increased Self-Confidence: It helps increase self-confidence, especially for those who feel self-conscious in social settings.

  • Natural Results: When performed with the correct technique, the surgery ensures the ears look aesthetically natural and harmonious.

  • Permanent Solution: Since the structure of the ear cartilage is permanently altered through surgical intervention, the results are lifelong.

Surgery and Recovery Process

Otoplasty is usually performed under local anesthesia for adults and general anesthesia for children. Through an incision made behind the ear, excess cartilage can be removed or the ear cartilage can be reshaped using permanent sutures. After the surgery, a bandage is wrapped around the head to protect the ears and support healing.

Mild pain and swelling are normal for a few days after the surgery. The bandages are typically removed after 1 week. During this time, it is recommended to wear a special headband at night for a few weeks to help the ears maintain their new position. Patients can usually return to their daily lives within a few days.

Procedure Duration

Protruding ear surgery is generally completed in 1 to 2 hours.

Hospital Stay Duration

Since it is mostly an outpatient procedure, the hospital stay is for one night or patients can be discharged on the same day.

Duration of Stay in Turkey

Since you live in Istanbul, this section may not apply to you. However, approximately 7 days will be sufficient for the removal of the bandages and follow-up checks after the surgery.
